Design Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject that includes Product Design, Textiles and Food Technology. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and resilient citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Design and Technology prepares pupils to think, design and manufacture creatively to enhance the quality of life in an ever-changing world. The subject encourages pupils to become resourceful, independent and creative problem solvers, as individuals and as members of a team.
We have a fully equipped specialist Design Technology department including a workshop and food room. In Year 5 and 6 pupils are taught the basics of Designing, making and evaluating as well learning new technical skills and knowledge using a variety of materials, ingredients, techniques and processes.
In Year 7 and 8 we expand on the technical skills and knowledge learnt in Key Stage 2 by extending projects and adding constraints to design briefs. Projects are often based on a design era or artistic movement to give a theme to the project and help pupils to avoid fixation and encourage research. Electronics is also introduced in Key Stage 3, challenging pupils and expanding their technical skills and knowledge. Food technology also becomes more challenging combining different skills and elements of dishes and having to adapt and change recipes to suit different dietary needs.
